Karatekas showcase skills at National Shito Ryu Karate Do Championship

The two-day 27th National Shito Ryu Karate Do Championship 2024, organised by All India Shito Ryu Karate Do Union (ASIKU), was inaugurated by Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar at Kodava Samaja Auditorium in Vijayanagar here yesterday.

MLA and Legal Advisor to the Chief Minister A.S. Ponnanna, MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda, Olympian and Ashwini Sports Foundation Founder Ashwini Karumbaiah, ASIKU Observers and Technical Advisors Sensei T.S. Wong and Sensei George Tan, AISKU President Arun Machaiah and General Secretary Rahul Tawde were present.

A total of 1,350 karatekas from 17 States are taking part in the Championship being held in U-6 to U-13 and above 13 years categories.

Asian refrees and judges, recognised by World Karate Federation, are officiating the matches. Organisers have made all arrangements to attend to any emergencies.

The winners of this Championship will take part in the Asia Pacific Shito Ryu Karate Do Championship to be held in Singapore from Nov. 27 to Dec. 4, said Arun Machaiah, who is also the Director of World Shito Ryu Karate Federation.

Uproar over selection of Kodagu athletes

Madikeri :

The decision to cancel the exclusive selection process for Kodagu athletes for state-level teams has irked sports persons in the Kodagu district. As many as 18 students, including three girls, selected at the district-level selection process have been removed.

Kodagu district has players at the state and national level and they have also participated in the Olympics events. An exclusive selection of Kodagu students has been going on for the past 23 years in Ponnampet. 

Arun Machaiah, a former MLC, accused senior officials behind the decision to cancel the selection.

A state-level sports school is being run at Kudige and the athletes to play at the state level are selected from there. 

While the national-level sports persons are selected from Sai Sports Residential School, Madikeri.

Machaiah said when the selection processes for national and state-level events come together the opportunities for the athletes of Kodagu are likely to decrease. 

Zilla panchayat had taken resolution for an exclusive selection of Kodagu students for state teams in Ponnampet School. It was approved by the Karnataka government in 2001.

Arun Machaiah At Commonwealth Karate Championship

Mysore/Mysuru: 

C.S. Arun Machaiah, former MLC, Hon. President of Mysore Karate Association, senior Vice-President of Karate India Organisation and President of Akhila Karnataka Sports Karate Association, is representing Team India at the 10th Commonwealth Karate Championship being held at Birmingham in London (UK) from today (Sept. 7).

The 70-member Indian Team of Karatekas, led by Arun Machaiah, left for London last Sunday. A total of 70 countries are expected to take part in the Championship.

Arun Machaiah has represented India in various International Karate Championships across the globe and has brought laurels to the country.
