Tata Coffee Ltd appoints Mr. Chacko Purackal Thomas as MD & CEO

Based on the recommendation of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee, the Board of Directors of Tata Coffee Limited at their meeting held today, the 24th December 2018, has appointed Mr. Chacko Purackal Thomas (who is currently the Executive Director & Deputy CEO) as ‘Managing Director & CEO designate’ with effect from 24th December 2018.

Mr. Chacko Thomas will assume charge as Managing Director & CEO of Tata Coffee Limited, effective 1st April 2019 after the retirement of Mr. Sanjiv Sarin, the current Managing Director and CEO, whose term of office would expire by 31st March 2019.

Mr. Chacko Purackal Thomas is a Bachelor of Science with specialization in Computer Science from the University of Jodhpur. He has over 26 years of rich experience and expertise in the field of Plantations, Business strategy, Sales and Marketing and overall leadership.

He has been associated with Tata Coffee Limited as the Executive Director & Deputy CEO since 4th August, 2015. Before joining Tata Coffee, he was the Managing Director of Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Company Private Limited, Munnar.

Shares of TATA COFFEE LTD. was last trading in BSE at Rs.95.45 as compared to the previous close of Rs. 94.45. The total number of shares traded during the day was 19718 in over 263 trades.

The stock hit an intraday high of Rs. 95.7 and intraday low of 94.45. The net turnover during the day was Rs. 1877889.

Chilling cold air blowing across Kodagu district pushed temperatures way down to 10 degree Celsius in Madikeri on Thursday.

The cloudy weather experienced in the past three days ended up increasing the chill factor and sent daytime temperature down to 10-degree Celsius.

With the temperature falling so low, Kodagu is freezing at dawn and dusk. Residents are protecting themselves from the biting cold by lighting up fires in the hearth and wearing warm woollen clothing.

Elderly people preferred to stay indoors. Due to the harsh weather, the Raja Seat now witnesses a thin attendance of people on morning walks.

The number of tourists visiting Madikeri during the winter season also dipped. Tourist agencies have attributed the fall in the number of tourists to fear of natural calamities.

There is no respite from the frosty weather for those residing in the hilly ranges of Mandalpatti, Tadiyandamol, Talacauvery and Brahmagiri.

Indresh, a senior citizen recollected that harsher weather was experienced a decade ago in the district.

“The cold weather was coupled with mist which remained for the most part of the day,’ he recounted.

Hockey Mysore Invitation Cup 2018: State-Level Tourney Hockey Coorg Wins Title

Hockey Coorg emerged winners of the Hockey Mysore Invitation Cup 2018 Inter-District State-level Men’s Hockey Tournament, conducted by Hockey Mysore, by registering a 1-0 win over the hosts Hockey Mysore in the final played at the University Grounds here yesterday.

The match-winning goal for Hockey Coorg was scored by centre-forward Mani in the 39th minute of the game. The goal was an excellent move initiated by defender Palangappa who gave a through pass from nearly 30 yards from the ‘D’ to Mani who deflected the same into the top of the net beating the Hockey Mysore goalkeeper all-hands-up.

At half time, both the teams were level 0-0. The second -half was keenly contested, but Hockey Coorg staved off the stiff challenge put up by Hockey Mysore and clung on to the slender lead to emerge as the victors.

While the winning team were awarded a cash prize of Rs.1,00,000 along with a trophy, the runners-up bagged home Rs.50,000 cash prize along with a trophy.

O.L. Ponnanna of Hockey Coorg was adjudged as the Best Player of the Tournament sponsored by Mandovi Motors, Mysuru.

The district-level School Track and Field Championship, organised by Ashwini Sports Foundation, was inaugurated at CALS School grounds on Thursday.

On the occasion, Ashwini Sports Foundation managing director Ashwini Nachappa said the championship provides a platform for sports enthusiastic students to display their talents.

For the first time, the event is conducted on a track covered with artificial lawn, she added.

CALS President Datta Karumbaiah and principal Bachettira Gowramma Nanjappa were present.

Participants from various schools of the district took out a march past on the occasion.

Events such as race, hurdles, shot put, discus throw, high jump, long jump and relay events were held for both boys and girls.

Students aged 12,14 and 16 years took part in various events.

Kisan Diwas Was Celebrated on 23rd December,2018 at KVK Gonikoppal, Kodagu campus Jointly by the Department of Agriculture, CHES, Chettalli and ICAR-KVK, Gonikoppal. About 100 farmers, Staff from Department of Agriculture, KVK and CHES Chettalli participated in the function. The programme was inaugurated by Shri Raghu Nanaiah, President, Taluka Krishika Samaja President. Other guests on the stage were Shri Chotu Kaverappa, President Zilla Krishika Samaja President, Shric S.C. Thimmaiah progressive farmer, Smt Ashwini Nanda and Shri M.P. Somaiah, President Puthari Farmers Producer Co. Ltd. The programme started with lighting of the lamp, followed by Felicitation of Progressive farmers for their integrated farming and Cleanliness in farming and minimum use of external inputs. Shri S.C. Thimmaiah of Nallur village, Ponnampet, Virajpet and Smt. Ashiwini Nanda were felicitated for their achievements in farming. Puthari Farmers organisation was felicitated in recognition of their services to the farming community.

The award winning farmers addressed the farmers and talked in detail about their farming practices and how through integrated farming system they are reducing the cost of cultivation and achieving higher productivity. 3 Kodagu students selected for NCSC

Three young scientists from two schools in Kodagu have been selected for National Children’s Science Congress (NCSC), to be organised by National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), at Bhubaneswar from December 27 to 31.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Kodagu Vidyalaya students Lekhana Muthakka (Senior category) and N N Niruth (Junior category) and H S Tejana (Rural senior category) of Angela Vidyanikethana School, Koodige, have been selected to attend the National Children’s Science Congress. The three students from Kodagu will be a part of 30 young scientists who will represent Karnataka at the Science Congress.

The three students had presented their scientific papers on innovations in science and technology for healthy nation.

Lekhana had presented an essay on how the disappearance of small water bodies have affected nature in Kodagu.

Tejana had presented a paper on use of bio plastic.

Niruth has presented a paper on modern life style affecting the health of an individual.

Book On Kodagu Flood Victims Released

“The search for my daughter Manjula whose life was lost during the landslide and floods on Aug.17 at Jodupala where she was studying in my sister Gowramma’s house is still going on. I live in a tribal area and on that fateful day even after I came to know of the tragedy, I was not able to reach the place. It was only four days later that we were able to go there only to find that my sister and other members of the family had all died,” recalled Somaiah, father of the flood victim Manjula from Kodagu.

He was sharing his experience after releasing the book ‘Kathe Heluve Nanna – Kodagina Nonda Hrudayagalu… Midida Managalu’ written by journalist Ravi Pandavapura at the Rani Bahadur Auditorium here this morning and said that his daughter was a tenth standard student and he was still in search of her body.

Kodagu Superintendent of Police Dr. Suman D. Pennekar said that it was just one month before she had taken charge and this was a very new experience when the tragedy struck, which was very challenging.

“There were distress calls all around. But everyone be it the local guides, officials and the public rose to the occasion and supported us in those trying times. Even the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Deputy Commissioner were with us. However, our first priority was to rescue those who were alive and only later we concentrated on recovering the dead bodies,” she said.

Senior Journalist Ananth Chinivar spoke about the book. Kodagu Press Club President Ajjamada Ramesh Kuttappa presided. Somaiah’s wife K.S. Jayanthi, sons K.S. Darshan and K.S. Roshan were present.

Abhiruchi Prakashna’s Abhiruchi Ganesh who has published the book and author Ravi Pandavapura were also present. The 128-page book is priced at Rs. 105 and the proceeds of the book will go towards Kodagu Relief Fund.

Kodagu set to gain from proximity to Kannur airport

The newly opened Kannur International Airport has brought smiles to Karnataka’s bordering district of Kodagu.

The closest airport from Madikeri, Gonikoppal, and Kushalnagar is Kannur, and tourism stakeholders are hoping that the new airport may prove a big advantage for tourist footfall in the coffee land.

Kushalnagar, a commercial town surrounded by tourism hotspots, is around 100 km from Kannur, while Madikeri and Gonikoppal are about 95 km and 55 km, respectively, from the Kerala city.

“Certainly, the airport will benefit Kodagu, both in terms of business and tourism. Whether the benefit will be felt immediately has to be seen. But, tourists travelling by road from Bengaluru airport may prefer Kannur airport to reach Kodagu,” said Kodagu Hotels, Resorts and Restaurants’ Association president Nagendra Prasad.

He, however, said the road linking Kannur and Madikeri should be developed within the State limits since the route till Kerala–Karnataka border from Kannur is a four-lane road. The Karnataka government should take immediate steps to develop the single-lane road till the border to facilitate tourist arrivals, Mr. Prasad urged. While the journey by road from Bengaluru to Madikeri takes about five hours, the route from Kannur to Kodagu is less than two hours.

Mysuru Travel Mart president B.S. Prashanth said the airport would open a new gateway for tourism developmentand eventually improve connectivity between the two States, thereby boosting tourism.

People flying to Kannur need not have to bother about traffic to reach their destination — Madikeri — unlike from Bengaluru, according to Mr. Prashanth as during weekends and holidays, the Mysuru–Bengaluru highway witnesses bumper-to-bumper traffic.

The new airport may also open a new route for tourists visiting Wayanad and Ooty — the other two popular destinations in south India.

Champa Shashti, devoted to Lord Subrahmanya, was celebrated with pomp and gaiety across the district.

Special prayers were offered at Muttappa temple and Omkareshwara temple in Madikeri. Temples were decorated with flowers and buntings on the occasion.

A beeline of devotees was found in Omkareshwara temple. ‘Teppotsava’ and a palanquin procession were held in the evening.

Ablutions were offered to the serpent God at Sri Kote Mariyamma temple as well.

In Kushalnagar

On the occasion of Champa Shashti celebrations, car festival and a special puja were performed at Sri Udbhava Subrahmanya Swami temple in Koodige village in Kushalnagar on Thursday.

Ablusions, ‘Mahapuje’ and ‘Mahamangalarathi’ were held in the temple in the morning. ‘Digbali’, ‘Rathabali’ and ‘Rathapuje’ were held prior to the car festival.

Thousands of people from the district along with those from Mysuru and Hassan took part in a grand car festival.

People belonging to Koodumangaluru community pulled the car from the temple premises till Koodumangaluru Community Hall.

Cultural troupes of ‘Veeragase’, ‘Garudi Gombe Kunitha’, ‘Keelu Kudure’, ‘Somana Kunitha’ and ‘Chende Vadya’ were part of the 50th annual car festival of the temple.

Devotees offered serpent hoods made out of silver to the deity at the temple, in fulfilment of their vows.

Special rituals were also held in Someshwara temple in Somwarpet and Beeralingeshwara Gramadevathe Sannidhi in Shanivarasanthe. Devotees offered milk and tender coconut water to Lord Subrahmanya.

The APMC in Madikeri will reintroduce ‘Raitha Santhe’, the farmers’ shandy, from December 21.

The weekly shandy was stopped following landslides and incessant rain in Kodagu.

After a long gap, the APMC has decided to relaunch the unique market wherein a platform will be provided to farmers to sell their produce directly to buyers (customers).

The programme, which was initiated on January 12 this year had received a poor response. The APMC has now relaunched the shandy by incorporating some changes with an objective to make it friendly for both the farmers and the buyers.

“From December 21, ‘Raitha Santhe’ will be held on the premises of the APMC near KSRTC depot on every Friday and Wednesday,” said APMC Madikeri Chairman S Ambi Cariappa.

It has been decided to hold the farmers’ shandy on two days in a week. Earlier, the market was meant only for the farmers of Madikeri taluk. This time, the facility will be extended to farmers from various parts of Kodagu district as well as from the state.

Basic amenities such as a new building and parking space will be provided at the venue of the ‘Raitha Santhe’.

APMC member Beppurana Medappa said that the ‘Raitha Santhe’ intends to encourage customers to purchase products directly from farmers at reasonable prices.

Apart from vegetables and fruits, value-added products by farmers will also be featured during the sale. Farmers have also been extended tax exemption to carry out the business, he added.

Another member Kangira Sathish said that earlier, the customers had complained of a limited variety of vegetables at the ‘Raitha Santhe’. Hence, provisions have been made this time to sell a wide range of vegetables, along with groceries.
