Madikeri :

Stating that Kodagu has some of the best military and sporting traditions in the country, Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said he was here to touch the soil that gave birth to late Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, Gen. K.S. Thimayya and other Generals who have served the Indian Army.

He was addressing the closing ceremony of Shantheyanda Family Hockey Tournament at Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College Ground here on Sunday.

Responding to a memorandum submitted by the tournament Organising Committee President Shantheyanda Ravi Kushalappa seeking a branch of the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Kodagu, conferment of Bharat Ratna Award posthumously to Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa and Gen. K.S. Thimayya, establishment of a DFRL unit in Kodagu and setting up of an exclusive Kodava Regiment in the Indian Army, among other things, Parrikar said he agrees that Kodagu should have been the location of some kind of military training institute and that he would definitely work on the idea. He observed that it was a tragedy that there is no military academy or military college in the district though a large number of youth from Kodagu were serving in Indian Defence Forces.

Assuring that he would raise the idea of setting up a Hockey Academy or Sports Authority in the district with the Sports Minister, Parrikar appreciated the people of Kodagu for their contribution to the armed forces.

Kodagu District-in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao in his speech, praised Parrikar for attending Kodava Hockey Festival despite his busy schedule. Terming Kodagu district as ‘Karnataka Ratna’ for its contributions to the country’s armed forces and sports, Dinesh Gundu Rao sought the co-operation of all concerned to take Kodagu to much greater heights through development. Shantheyanda family Pattedar Shantheyanda B.Monnappa presided.

Pre-monsoon rainfall perks up coffee growers

To restrict further crop damage caused by dry weather

Bengaluru :

The recent pre-monsoon rainfall in key coffee growing regions of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu is expected to help restrict damage to the 2016-17 crop, which has been impacted by the prolonged and higher than usual temperatures and delayed blossom showers.

The rainfall over the past few days has provided some relief to growers of arabicas, the premium and mild coffee variety, besides being seen as beneficial for the pepper crop, largely grown as a key intercrop in the coffee estates and arecanut plantations in the region.

“The plantation districts of Coorg, Chikmagalur and Hassan have received widespread rains over the past few days. The rainfall will help contain the damage caused by the delayed arrival of blossom showers,” said Baba PS Bedi, Chairman of the Karnataka Planters Association.

Blossom rain

Timely arrival of pre-monsoon showers is crucial for the blossoming of the coffee floral buds. Traditionally, the robusta and arabica variety growing areas should receive pre-monsoon showers for a good blossom by March 15 and April 15 respectively.

However, the blossom showers were delayed this year and were erratic in some areas, thereby hurting the prospects of the robusta variety. “It is too early to quantify the impact of delayed showers on robustas,” Bedi said.

Though some growers had taken up sprinkler irrigation for the robustas, the inadequate availability of water due to deficient rainfall in the last two years did pose a challenge to them. The coffee growing regions started receiving widespread rainfall from the first week of May, and some regions continue to receive rains. “It rained even today,” said N Bose Mandanna, a large grower in Suntikoppa near Madikeri in Coorg, on Thursday.

The rain has helped Arabica blossom and the crop should be good, provided there is no significant incidence of the pest – the white stem borer, Mandanna said. However, the delayed rainfall has already hurt the prospects of robustas in some areas, which cannot be reversed.

“It has been raining in most of the growing areas in Karnataka where coffee has blossomed,” said Y Raghuramulu, Director of the Balehonnur-based Central Coffee Research Institute. The rain should help in setting of the crop. Even the coffee growing areas of Tamil Nadu have received rain since last week, which is very good for the arabica crop, he said.

Crop estimate

“If only the rains had arrived two to three weeks earlier, there would not have been much impact,” Raghuramulu said, adding that the Coffee Board has started the estimating the crop size for 2016-17 based on the blossom, which is likely to be finalised by end-June.

After two years of good harvest, coffee is facing an off-year for the 2016-17 season starting October. The Coffee Board has estimated the 2015-16 crop at 3.5 lakh tonnes, a 7 per cent increase over the previous year’s 3.27 lakh tonnes.n

For Ladies, It’s Love Over Money

Dipika Pallikal (left) and Joshna Chinappa with kids in Chennai on Friday | D Sampathkumar

Chennai :

When Joshna Chinappa makes her flight bookings to take part in events on the other side of the world, she must ensure that she advances well into the tournament to even break even. Unbelievable? “If I make the main draw in a $25,000 event, I get about $400 for playing the first round,” she says. “But what’s $400. Flight costs $1000. So you are not really making much unless you are a top 10 player.”

Chinappa is just outside the top 10 (world No 13), but even she finds the unforgiving nature of the sport a bit tough at times. “It is hard because I pretty much do this on my own. I travel on my own so it is sometimes hard to be constantly motivated when you don’t have someone in your corner. A lot of girls I play with are in the top 15 and they always come with a team. So I am at a slight disadvantage but I have been playing and enjoying.”

Given that’s the case, has the 29-year-old ever contemplated giving it all up? The answer starts even before the question is completed. “I just love what I do,” she smiles. “I don’t know anything else. I have a limited time in this field and I just want to make the most of it.”

The Chennai girl, who was at the Indian Squash Academy (ISA) on Friday for an exhibition match-up with Malaysia’s Delia Arnold (No 15) and Dipika Pallikal (No 19), also spoke about how the sport is on the right path apropos equal pay. “It’s become so much better in squash. A lot of the big tournaments have equal pay but you are not going to have that all the time. There will be times when the men get paid more and there will be times when the women get paid more. It balances out somewhere down the line,” she says.

Pallikal chimes in. “Two days ago, it was announced that the 2017 World Open (Manchester) will be having equal pay for the first time. That’s a massive change. I’m a big believer in it and I hope our sport can set the standard.”

Given Pallikal and Chinappa cannot play together because of the absence of a doubles tour on the circuit, the former was happy to have a hit with her more senior partner. “We don’t tend to play with each other because of the absence of the absence of a doubles circuit. We only play once in four years during the Commonwealth Games. So it was nice to come back and enjoy a hit with her.”

The 24-year-old has slid down the rankings chart recently but isn’t too bothered about that. “Rankings aren’t as important for me as much as playing well and enjoying the game. I keep telling myself that if I play well, the rankings will automatically improve.”

Bigger tests await both women but they will first have to tackle giants Malaysia in the Asian Team Championship that begins in Chinese Taipei from May 11.

Indian hockey team’s star striker SV Sunil feels they are better prepared for Rio Games

India have been clubbed with big names of the hockey world in Rio Olympics.

Star men’s hockey team striker SV Sunil feels India are much better prepared this time around for the Olympics than four years ago in London and said playing Germany in the Champions Trophy will them in good stead against the reigning champions in the Rio Games.

India are clubbed along side defending champions Germany, European champions Netherlands, Pan-American Games champions Argentina, Ireland and Canada in Pool B in the Rio Olympics. And Sunil, who vies to be at his best against the mighty Germans, said the Champions Trophy will provide them much-needed knowledge about top teams, including Germany.

“They (Germany) are the best team in the world. It is my priority to do well against them in the Champions Trophy and at the Olympics. Playing them in the Champions Trophy will help us understand their game better ahead of the Olympics. We discussed Germany in our previous team meetings and we are aware of their strength and weaknesses,” said Sunil.

Talking about eight-time champions India’s preparation for the Olympics, Sunil hoped for a much-better performance the team in Rio, unlike four years ago in London where they finished last among 12 teams.

“Last time, we paid more attention to fitness but this time, it is very different. We are paying attention to overall development as a team and the training has a lot to do with discipline and team spirit which I think has helped us on the field and in understanding each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” he said.

“The approach we have for the Olympics this time is far more systematic and I feel we are on the right track,” the 27-year-old striker from Coorg added.

Sunil was named as the vice-captain of the team for last month’s Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia, where India finished runners-up. Asked about the new responsibility, he said: “I don’t feel that the role of vice-captain brings any pressure to my game. Being part of the team for so long, I have learnt to handle pressure and that helps me stick to my natural game.”

“Vice-captaincy for me is all about making the youngsters in the team understand their role and motivate them to play to their potential,” he added.

Hailing from a poor family, Sunil said he is indebted to hockey for what he is today. “Coming from a poor family in Coorg, hockey has given me everything I need to lead a comfortable life. And when I play, I remember what the game has given me for the sacrifices I have made. I will do everything to bring glory for the country,” he said.

Since making his debut in the senior team nine years ago, Sunil has gained the reputation of being ‘the fastest man on the turf’, a fact which chief coach Roelant Oltmans too agrees. “He (Sunil) is an attacker and brings something exceptional to the team. He understands our demands and he keeps questioning what we are doing in a positive way so that he can understand it and translate it to the younger players,” said Oltmans.

Now, Solar power to pump water for wild animals at Nagarahole

Nagarahole first in the State to implement the project on experimental basis

PCCF B.J. Hosmath to inaugurate the project tomorrow

PumpWaterKF10may2016

Mysuru :

With water bodies drying up due to lack of rains in almost all forests in the State and also because of scorching heat, the Forest Department has now turned towards solar energy to pump water to water bodies on an experimental basis at Nagarahole Reserve Forest, the first in the State to do so.

The project of pumping water to water bodies by utilising solar power will be inaugurated on Sunday (May 8) by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) B.J. Hosmath.

The Tiger Tank at Antharasanthe Zone in Nagarahole Reserve Forest, which used to cater to the needs of the wild animals, got dried up about three months ago and the animals were forced to go in search of water.

RFO Mahesh, who observed the animals moving in search of water, began to fill the water bodies using tankers, but it was not enough to cater to their needs. Hence, a borewell was sunk about 100 mts away from the Tiger Tank and a submersible pump was installed to pump water to the tank. Now, to supply power to the water pump, solar panels with 5100 watts capacity have been installed about 20 ft. above the ground and solar energy is being tapped to supply power to the pump.

A pipe is placed to pump water from the borewell to the tank, which is about 100 mts. away, and three litres of water is being pumped per second into the tank. The water pump will pump water for 6 to 8 hours a day with a total of 60,000 to 80,000 litres being pumped into the tank every day.

The solar panel is installed at a cost of Rs. 9 lakh and the cost was borne by wildlife enthusiast Tiger Ramesh, who had earlier donated CCTV Cameras to Bandipur and Nagarahole.

The Tiger Tank was drying up fast and we used to fill water to the tank using water tankers since three months. For the first time in the State, solar energy is being utilised in the forest to pump water to fulfill the water needs of wild animals. If this experiment succeeds, the same will be implemented in other places where there is scarcity of water.

Develop Bhagamandala, Talacauvery, say locals

Local leader K J Bharat has urged the state government to develop Bhagamandala and Talacauvery in the taluk.

Addressing mediapersons, he said the government has neglected Talacauvery, the origin place of River Cauvery. Development works have been initiated here, he charged.

He claimed that soil has been dumped into paddy fields near Chamundi Bane of Bhagandeshwara Temple in Bhagamandala.

The soil, dumped on a large proportion and on a 100 metre wide and 10 foot tall area, will result in storm water flowing towards the temple and Bhagamandala, creating artificial floods. People cannot use the boats as the mud is dumped in front of the building where the boats are placed. Though a memorandum has been submitted to the local gram panchayat, no measures have been taken yet, Bharat charged.

He said Bhagandeshwara temple was renovated ten years ago. The kitchen and the room of the priest leak in rainy season. The tender process to carry out repair of the temple roof has stopped abruptly. There is no proper door for the temple. Though there is a fund of Rs 2 crore in the temple account, the officials are taking up repair work, he charged.

‘No safety measures’

Bharat said thousands of devotees and pilgrims visit Talacauvery and Bhagamandala every year. But their protection is not taken care of.

The bridge at Chedukaru in Tavoor village has collapsed. The bridge is only 10 years old and the narrow bridge constructed during the British period is still strong and vehicles move on that bridge.

The contractor who has constructed the Tavoor bridge should be blacklisted, he urged and warned of staging a rasta roko protest, if the demand is not fulfilled.

Local residents K S Prabhakar, K C Parashuram, Manoj Kumar, Yoganand and Poonaccha among those who were present in the press conference.
