Tributes were paid to K. Mireille Chengappa, 86, daughter of Gen. K.S. Thimayya, India’s 6th Chief of Army Staff, at Thimayya Memorial Museum in Madikeri on Saturday.

Ms. Chengappa passed away in Bengaluru on Friday and the staff of the museum made floral offerings to her portrait and recalled her contribution to the establishment of the museum and observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect.

General K.S. Thimayya’s Daughter Passes Away

Bengaluru: 

Kongetira Mireille Chengappa, aged 86 years, wife of Maj. Gen. Kongetira M. Chengappa and daughter of General Kodandera S. Thimayya, passed away in Bengaluru at 7 pm yesterday. She leaves behind her son K.C. Belliappa and daughter Amrita.

Last rites will be performed at Hebbal crematorium in Bengaluru today at 6 pm, said family sources.

General Kodandera Subayya Thimayya served as the Chief of Army Staff from 1957 to 1961 in the crucial years leading up to the conflict with China in 1962.

Mireille was born in 1936 and Gen. Thimayya and his wife Nina (from Codanda family) named her Mireille as Nina was sent to France for schooling as a 13-year-old. She stayed there for 5 years and found the name Mireille popular in France.

Mireille studied at Bishop Cotton Girls School in Bengaluru for a brief period before she went to Woodstock at Mussoorie and later had a stint at J.J. School of Arts, Mumbai

Her son (Gen. Thimayya’s grandson) Belliappa lives in Bengaluru and is married to Nicole, a professional photographer. The General’s granddaughter Amrita is married to a German and they live near Almora in Uttaranchal.

Obituary : Theetharamada Deep Belliappa

Mysuru, Jan. 13-

Theetharamada Deep Belliappa (71), a native of Kodagu, passed away at Mississauga in Canada yesterday.

He leaves behind his wife Lekha, son Kamal, daughter-in-law Rukshana, grandson Dilan and a host of relatives and friends, according to family sources.

Madikeri: New invention – Face mask behind head to avoid tiger attack

Madikeri : 

“Tigers never attack human beings from front. They attack from behind. In order to prevent attack of tigers, people of Sundarbans in West Bengal are using human faced mask on the back of their head and it is found to be successful. This might be useful in Kodagu district also,” said Col C P Muttanna, honorary secretary of environment and health foundation.

Muttanna further said, “Many people have died due to tiger attacks in Sundarbans, area were Brahmaputra river joins Bay of Bengal. Now the incidents have reduced due to people wearing human face mask on the back of their heads.

“In the south part of Kodagu, tiger attacks have increased and five people have already died. So a proposal is sent to the government to provide human face mask made of rubber.

“When one studies the tiger attack cases of the district, it becomes apparent that the tiger attacks people who go for open defecation in the morning. Though it is said that Kodagu district is open-defecation free, there are many areas where people still go to fields to defecate as there are no toilets. The government must provide toilets to households where there is no toilet,” he said.

Col Muttanna also asked people to leave the half eaten carcass of cattle as it is as the tiger will come again to eat the same and it will be easier for forest department to cage it.

Ponnampet’s CIT Accredited With NAAC “A” Grade

Ponnampet: 

Coorg Institute of Technology (CIT) at Halligattu, Ponnampet, functioning under the Kodava Education Society (KES), has been accredited with “A” grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

This was announced by CIT Secretary C.P. Rakesh Poovaiah here recently in the presence of Principal Dr. M. Basavaraj, teaching and non-teaching staff. The NAAC team visited several Departments in CIT on Dec. 22 and 23 to assess the institution in accordance with  NAAC guidelines.

Lauding the Principal and staff, KES President Dr. M.C. Kariappa said the responsibility of the staff had increased with the allotment of “A” grade and goaded them to go for higher grades in future.

Endorsing Dr. Kariappa’s views, Rakesh Poovaiah noted that the staff should not slacken their efforts but continue with the same vigour to score higher grades as also secure National Board of Accreditation (NBA), another mode of accreditation for higher educational institutions in the country.

Academic Council members Dr. Pushpa Kuttanna, Dr. Ponnamma Machaiah and K.S. Thimmaiah, guided the CIT teams to prepare for NAAC.

CIT’s NAAC Coordinator Dr. Ramakrishna, Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) Coordinator Prof. B.J. Kishen Karumbaiah and Heads of all Departments, were present.

NAAC is a Government organisation that assesses and accredits higher educational institutions. The main purpose is to create an understanding about the status of education quality among                                                          the institutes.

NAAC accreditation focuses on improving quality parameter of education and aims at improving overall development of students by helping them inculcate skills and knowledge.

‘World of Coffee Dubai 2023’ kicks off amidst high anticipation

The three-day event is being organised by DXB Live, the integrated event management and experiential agency of Dubai World Trade Centre, in cooperation with the Specialty Coffee Association.

The second edition of World of Coffee Dubai 2023 is of high significance to the coffee sector

Khalid Al Hammadi, senior vice-president of DXB Live, said the second edition of World of Coffee Dubai 2023 is of high significance to the coffee sector given the increased level of global interest for participating in its numerous activities.

“This year, the exhibition has been successful in bringing together numerous industry leaders and professionals from global, regional, and local levels under one roof, further offering significant opportunities to strengthen networks, forge alliances, and discuss future prospects,” he said.

“The immense turnout of thousands of experts and specialists from across the globe in this exhibition and the business events hosted by the Emirate reflects the confidence of the international community and its recognition of the crucial role that Dubai plays in fostering commercial traffic at regional and global levels,” he said.

The exhibition is open from Wednesday and Thursday, January 11 and 12, 2023, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Friday, January 13, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

‘UAE National Barista Championship’ competition

Several activities and events were held on the first day of the exhibition, the most significant being the ‘UAE National Barista Championship,’ in which prominent and accomplished baristas from across the nation compete to qualify for the ‘International Barista Championship’. An international jury evaluated the entries based on the quality of the beverages, presentation, creativity, technical competence, and cleanliness.

The national championship aims to promote excellence in the coffee industry, highlight the barista profession, and give baristas a platform to demonstrate their skills and innovative abilities in the field of coffee preparation. Dazzling offers and a tour of international coffee varieties

The exhibition offers a variety of unique experiences, as visitors flocked to the ‘Roosters Village’ pavilion to meet professionals from the coffee industry, learn about their methods of coffee preparation, and sample coffee variants prepared with unique and distinctive methods from around the world.

The ‘Pro Bar’ also witnessed an impressive footfall for its unique experiences, in which 12 participating companies and brands got a three-hour period to display their coffee variants. The companies participating in the ‘Pro Bar’ included ‘Guatemalan Coffees’, ‘The Eco Machine’, ‘Corabot Coffee’, ‘Kirchanchi, El Patrón’, ‘Tess Super General Trading, Roasters’, ‘IST’, ‘Things Café’, ‘Coffee Trading’, ‘Coffee Planet’, and ‘Pani Coffee’.

Wide choice of coffee gourmets

During the first day of the exhibition, the ‘Cabin Room’ booth hosted four exhibitors: Earth Roastery, Skuvsna NV, the Alliances for Action initiative from the International Trade Centre, and the Golden Cup Championship winners from Fairtrade Coffee. Each of them highlighted a particular variety of coffee beans and the unique roasting techniques used to prepare them and provided gourmet visitors and coffee enthusiasts with the opportunity to taste, assess, and compare them.

The exhibition is open from Wednesday and Thursday, January 11 and 12, 2023, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Friday, January 13, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Coffee Board refurbishes India Coffee House at its premises with old world charm intact

While the classic menu, existing staff members and the old charm of the Coffee Board cafe will untouched, a fast food menu has been introduced to attract the younger generation.

Coffee Board of India has renovated and renewed its cafe, India Coffee House (ICH), located at its premises in Bengaluru. It has also added a ‘sitting on the veranda and sipping a cuppa’ kind of experience to it.

While your favourite dosa, idli and vade, sandwich, cutlet, bread toast and coffee, existing staff members and the old charm of the Coffee Board cafe will remain, an additional fast food menu has been introduced, in association with social enterprise Mitti Cafe, to attract the younger generation.

The ICH, set up in 1972, has been a favourite coffee joint for journalists, government officials and also the general public who visited the High Court, Vidhana Soudha and other government and private offices nearby.

Coffee Board CEO and Secretary K.G. Jagadeesha said, “Even after the renovation, the classic, existing menu will remain untouched while a new menu has been introduced in collaboration Mitti Cafe to get more youngsters to the cafe.’‘

Rajesh Agrawal, Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry said, “The idea is not to get into the market and compete with Cafe Coffee Day, Starbucks and other cafes. This cafe will only be a catalyst for coffee in the country.’‘

Redoing other ICHs

Responding to a query on when the other ICHs in the country would be renovated, Mr. Agrawal added, “Let us see how India Coffee House is doing, before we start renovating other ICHs in the country. All these are historical coffee houses and they come with a unique legacy, we can touch them only with a lot of sensitivity, fully respecting the sentiments of the staff and customers.’‘

The India Coffee House (ICH) chain was started by the Coffee Cess Committee of the Coffee Board and the first outlet was opened in Churchgate, Bombay during 1936. During the 1940s, there were nearly 50 Coffee Houses all over British India which has currently reduced to 11 — one in Bengaluru, five in Delhi, four in Kolkata and one in Tirumala.

Ferns Estates and Developers setting up resorts in Coorg, Chikballapur

Bengaluru-based real estate company, Ferns Estates and Developers, which has entered the luxury hospitality business, is establishing properties that are close to nature and easy to reach.

The company estimates revenue of Rs 363 crore in five years from the hospitality segment alone, according to Errol Fernandes, CMD, Ferns Estates and Developers.

“We started our first resort in 2021 in Sakleshpur – a luxury property spread over 100 acres, with an investment of Rs 160 crore. At present, there are 126 keys and we plan to expand the resort by adding another 76 keys. The estimated investment for this expansion is around Rs 50 crore,” said Fernandes.

Going forward, two more resorts are being set up in Coorg, which is spread over 25 acres of coffee plantation, with an investment of Rs 60 crore, and another in Chikballapur, spread over 7 acres. “The best part is that all these locations are within a day’s drive from Bengaluru, which was one of the goals in establishing them,” he added.

The company is also acquiring a resort in Goa. “In Goa, we have acquired a 100-key property for Rs 150 crore. It is on the verge of being completed. We should be able to start operations in September 2023,” Fernandes said. The property would be funded with debt to the tune of about Rs 100 crore, and Rs 50 crore from internal accruals.

Real Estate

The company, which has been in the real estate business for the last 34 years, has built gated communities, apartments, and office spaces in Bengaluru.

“For our real estate arm, we don’t intend to venture outside Karnataka; however, we plan on going to tier-two cities such as Mysore, Mangaluru, and Hubli Dharwad. Initially, we plan to set up gated communities and then get into apartments later. As of now, we are scouting for land. We are developing another vertical called branded plots in Sakleshpur,” said Fernandes.

In the case of gated communities, it expects to grow by 20 per cent every year, and typically do around 5 lakh sq feet of sales annually. Similarly, it sells around one lakh of sq feet of apartment space annually and expects to grow by 20 per cent, said the CMD.

Ferns Estates and Developers expects to end FY23 with a revenue turnover of Rs 185 crore, of which Rs 40 crore would come from its hospitality arm.
