Robin Uthappa‘s dream run with the bat was rewarded in the 17th CEAT awards gala, where the stylish right-handed batsman walked home with the award for the CEAT Domestic Cricketer of the Year. On the recent IPL victory, he says “it wouldn’t have been sweet if we had not won.”

On the back of a stellar Ranji Trophy campaign for Karnataka, where he averaged a humongous 89 and led his state to a unique hat-trick of domestic titles i.e Ranji Trophy, Deodar Trophy and the Irani Cup. Uthappa was the lynchpin of his side with excellent displays at the top of the order.

Uthappa’s stupendous run did not stop there and helped his Indian Premier League (IPL), where he looked impregnable and took home the top run-getter’s Orange Cap. He had a jaw-dropping nine consecutive 40+ scores to lead his franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their second IPL triumph. Uthappa’s consistent displays with the bat have earned him an India call-up for their upcoming One-Day International (ODI) tour of Bangladesh.

CoffeeKF07jun2014

India’s coffee exports increased by 9.32% in value terms at Rs 2,567 crore during the January-May period this year on better realisation in view of firm global prices, according to the Coffee Board.

Coffee shipments from India, the world’s fifth biggest exporter, stood at Rs 2,347.92 crore in the corresponding period last year.

In volume terms, however, the shipments fell marginally to 1,59,275 tonnes in January-May of 2014 from 1,59,295 tonnes in the year-ago period.

“Because of firm global price trend, we got average export realisation of Rs 1,61,160 per tonne. This is 9% higher than Rs 1,47,394 per tonne earned in the year-ago period,” a senior Board official said.

Global coffee prices have risen by more than 80% during the period – after having dipped sharply last year – on expectation of production fall in the world’s largest coffee producer Brazil, the official added.

According the Board’s latest data, the country exported 43,465 tonnes of Arabica coffee and 73,645 tonnes of Robusta coffee during the January-May of this year.

The Arabica shipments rose by 31% from 33,220 tonnes, while Robusta exports dropped by 15% from 86,736 tonnes in the said period.

The shipment of instant coffee rose significantly by 91% to 18,875 tonnes in January-May of this year as against 9,850 tonnes in the year-ago.

Total domestic output is expected to be in line with the Board’s estimate of 3,11,500 tonnes for 2013-14 crop year (October-September), down by 2.1% from 3,18,200 tonnes produced in 2012-13.

India exports coffee largely to Italy, Germany, Belgium, Jordan, Turkey and Russia, among others.

MP Pratap Simha receives rousing reception in Kodagu

MpPratabSinhaKF06jun2014

Madikeri :

The newly-elected MP from Mysore-Kodagu constituency, Pratap Simha, was given a rousing welcome on his arrival here yesterday. The district BJP members had organised a road show in which Simha participated after offering special pujas at prominent temples in Talacauvery and Bhagamandala.

The open jeep road show commenced from Gadduge with MLAs K.G. Bopaiah, Appachu Ranjan, former MLC S.G. Medappa, District BJP President Suja Kushalappa and others participating in it.

Simha was later felicitated at a function held at Cauvery Kalakshetra. Addressing the press later, he assured that he would not allow any project which would be detrimental to Kodagu.

When questioned whether he would explore the possibility of providing a rail link to Kodagu, Simha said that with D.V. Sadanandagowda as Railway Minister the project would be explained as the survey work on the project has already been done from Mysore to Kushalnagar.

When a reporter pointed out that the survey report had opined that the railway project was not feasible, Simha said that all projects need not be profitable as railways was a service oriented department.

When asked about the development plans for Kodagu, Simha said that he would go by the suggestions of locals MLAs. He observed that the taluks of Hunsur and Periyapatna were deprived of good infrastructure and assured to give top priority for that.

When pointed out that the DC was not responding properly to the grievances of the people, Simha said that he would call for a meeting of all officers of district to discuss the matter and bring in harmony.

IPL trophy a tick on my to-do list: Uthappa

KKR opener is elated to have capped off a successful domestic season with the IPL trophy

RobinUthappaKF05jun204

Robin Uthappa has defied the law of averages. In a format that is more fickle than English weather, he strung 10 scores of 40-plus on the bounce, in Pepsi IPL 2014. The Kolkata Knight Riders opener was the single most important reason behind the team’s unbelievable jump from the near bottom of the table in the first phase of the tournament to them surging to the IPL crown.

With his 660 runs in the tournament at an average of 44 and a strike-rate of 137.78, Uthappa overtook the likes of Glenn Maxwell and Dwayne Smith to go home with the Orange Cap. After KKR’s thrilling three-wicket win in the final against KXIP, an elated and excited Uthappa narrated his joy in an interview with IPLT20.com.

Here are excerpts from his interview:

A perfect end to the fairytale?

Oh, absolutely! This is absolutely stunning! The whole feeling is just so surreal. For me, personally, this is the fourth cup in a year and so, wow! It doesn’t get better than this, does it? This has been such an amazing ride. We didn’t start off well, but there was always the belief that we can get our campaign back on track if we just take it one game at a time, and that is exactly what we did. Even today, we knew that on this ground we can chase down any score. We only had to keep up with the run-rate and keep ourselves in the game. Literally, everybody chipped in.

Where would you rate this in your career achievements?

I have set some goals for myself – a to-do list. But this year has been something else. The Ranji Trophy, the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Irani Trophy and now the IPL, all in one year! I never thought I’ll be able to do that. It’s amazing. This is a tick in another box.

10 consecutive 40-plus scores in the T20 format – it’s unreal!

I was very keen on making a meaningful contribution to the team’s cause and I am really happy to be able to do that, and many times, also carrying the team through from difficult situations. To keep pulling off the scores after the sixth or seventh one there was a bit of pressure. I kept reminding myself to forget about the past scores, just stay in the present, and play the ball on its merit. It all fell into place, and here we are!

Going back at the top of the order must have felt like homecoming.

Well, opening the batting is my bread and butter; that’s what I do for a living. It was great that the management showed faith in me and I am glad I lived up to their expectations. I am glad I lived up to my own expectations.

Good to have some runs from the captain as well and batting with him?

Absolutely! Gauti and I have always batted well opening the batting together. We’ve done that for India and have also played a lot of domestic cricket together, for India A. The understanding and the camaraderie between us is really good. We really egg each other on while batting, which is the most important thing when two batsmen are setting up a foundation for the team. Also, it’s very good to bat with a left-hander as that combination will always make things difficult for the opposition.

Uthappa recalled for ODI series in Bangladesh

Suresh Raina will captain the side in the absence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli

Robin Uthappa made a comeback to the India ODI squad
Robin Uthappa made a comeback to the India ODI squad

Robin Uthappa was recalled to the Indian team on Wednesday (May 28) for the three-match One-Day International series in Bangladesh, beginning in Mirpur on June 15.

In the absence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli, both of who have been rested keeping in mind the hectic season ahead, Suresh Raina has been named captain of the side.

The 15-man squad wears a vastly different look from the one that visited the same part of the world for the Asia Cup in February-March. Raina, who was dropped for that tournament, and Uthappa lead those making their comebacks.

Uthappa made a case for himself with ten straight 40-plus scores in IPL 7 for Kolkata Knight Riders, on the back of a stellar domestic season.

Others that have made it in to the side are Manoj Tiwary, Kedar Jadhav, Akshar Patel, Parveez Rasool, Wriddhiman Saha, R Vinay Kumar and Mohit Sharma, all of who have been impressive at various stages of the 2014 season of the IPL.

Rested from the Asia Cup squad, apart from Dhoni and Kohli are Shikhar Dhawan, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Varun Aaron and Ishwar Pandey.

Squad for ODI series in Bangladesh: Suresh Raina (capt), Robin Uthappa, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ambati Rayudu, Manoj Tiwary, Kedar Jadhav, Wriddhiman Saha, Parveez Rasool, Akshar Patel, R Vinay Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Stuart Binny, Mohit Sharma, Amit Mishra.

A Friendly Solitude

ElephantsKF03jun2014

Kodaimelanadu or Kodagu or Coorg is an hour-long drive from Mysore along winding roads that take you through a collage of colours which explode into shades of greens, browns and yellows. As you squint through the green fabric, plantations of coffee, cardamom and pepper speed by, merging with larger forestscape. The hiss of the tyres accentuate the haunting solitude of the journey; no wonder Coorg is called the Scotland of the East.

Much of Coorg is about coffee and a fair amount of cardamom and pepper. Siddapur district seemed a tree-shadowed coffee estate, dotted with contradictions—a few market places, seedy bars, pork shops and elegant vegetable displays. As we travelled, we grew wiser about coffee: its history, its clandestine entry into India, and the difference between arabica and robusta. The British brought coffee to Coorg. The first estate was established way back in 1850s by an Englishman, John Frawler.

Coorg seems to be made for introverts, there is an overwhelming feeling of seclusion, where from a distance you can spot a coffee pod, but it is difficult to spot your immediate neighbour. It is an immense aviary, and home to nearly a quarter of the bird population of Karnataka. The tour guide seemed to be Coorgi Salim Ali; he knew the names of each and every bird. At times he even imitated their calls perfectly. Every hilly region has at least one well known waterfall, and in Coorg it is Abbey Falls that plunges down, separating some coffee and spice estates to join the river Kaveri. An army of clouds envelope the hill. The walk is enough to give anyone an appettite for the singular flavours of Kodava food. The central piece of Kodava cuisine is meat and rice. I tried the irresistible Pandi curry, a subtle pork dish, cooked well by adding a local fruit, Kanchampali. Dry spices are roasted before grounding them, giving a toasty flavour to the thick curry.

As night falls, the highlands of Kodagu become a magical place. The moon shines brightly and the trees are laden with millions of fireflies, as if decked up for some fat Indian wedding.

In the morning, the mist-laden verdant hills awaited in silence. The Dubare reserve encompasses 50,000 acres and is home to the elephants of the Western Ghats. Majestic rosewood, teak and other hardwood tree species stand around like sentinels. Giant parasitic vines are swathed around large banyans and other trees in a macabre bond. As Hansel and Gretel would’ve felt, the forest kept getting thicker and more enchanting. Below, the river Kaveri, flowed unmindful of the inter-state disputes. Grabbing a coracle, drifting on the green waters and gauging the moods of the river and the pristine surroundings is one way to experience Coorg.

Local myth says the invincible Coorgis descended from Alexander’s Macedonians. “Neither Tipu Sulatan, nor the British could conquer it,” said the guide. The place has a long history of war; the Madikeri fort is a living testimony to that. Built as a mud fort by Mudduraja in the 17th century, it was later rebuilt in granite by Tipu Sultan who renamed the site Jaffarabad. In the north-east corner at the entrance stand two life-size statues of elephants. A church stands in the south-east corner. The fort also houses a prison.

Among the other architectural treasures of Coorg is the Omkareshwara temple built by King Lingaraja in 1820, in a mosque-like style, with an impressive central dome and four minarets, which are surrounded by Basavas, or sacred bulls. On the top of the dome sits a gilded ball with a weathercock. The Raja’s seat is a small pavilion in a garden, offering a view of the green valley below, where it is said the kings of Coorg spent evenings with their consorts. From there, they would’ve seen the melting sun, parrot-green fields and the mountains sleeping in the mist as if time had dawdled here, mesmerised by the languid beauty of Kodagu.

To Reach: Madikeri is the nearest bus station. There are frequent buses from Mysore, Mangalore and Bangalore to Coorg.

To Stay: For luxury, the Orange Country Inn. For an authentic Coorg experience, try a planation home stay.
