Develop sportive spirit, says ex-cricketer David Johnson

International excricketer David Johnson, who was in town recently, inaugurated the Dr Akhil Kuttappa and Ashwath Ayyappa Memorial Cricket tournament for high school students on Sunday.

Addressing the students, the cricketer said, “Sports activities are as important as the regular curriculum. Students must develop a sportive spirit. Cricket has undergone a lot of changes in the past five years. Students can become good sportspersons, if they decide to.”

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavana Kodagu Vidyalaya, General Thimmaiah Public School, Rajeshwari School, St Michael School, St Joseph School, National Academy Gonikoppa, Sacred Heart School, Coorg Public School, Blossam and Crescent School teams took part in the tournament.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kodagu Vidyalaya principal E Seenivasan, Kodagu Vidyalaya member K S Devaiah, Ram Bopanna and Munir Ahmed were present.

Ashwini Sports Foundation to be inaugurated on April 17

Ashwini Sports Foundation, started by the former India sprint queen, Ashwini Nachappa, to promote sports three years ago, will be formally launched at the Karumbaiah’s Academy for Learning and Sports (KALS) school at 4 p.m. in Gonicoppa on April 17.

Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs M.S. Gill, will launch the programme at a simple function at the KALS, Ms. Nachappa, who had represented India in Olympics, Asian Games and other international competitions, told The Hindu on Tuesday.

KALS, an ICSE-affiliated institution, is run by Ms. Nachappa and her sports-promoter husband, Maneyapanda Datta Karumbaiah. “We want to produce champions in all disciplines of sports,” she said. The foundation tied-up with the Indian Golf Union (IGU) to train the wards from the KALS in a junior programme at the Coorg Golf Links (CGL) located in Bittangala, near Virajpet town a year and halfs ago. About seven of them had picked up the game to such an extent that they had started taking part in the tournaments, Ms. Nachappa added.

An athletic development programme was being organised at the KALS involving more than 50 students drawn from all schools in the district. It would also involve 25 students from the Parikrma Humanity Foundation in the days to come, she said.

Madikeri : Rs 125 crores for development of Catholic community – MLA Lobo

“An amount of Rs 125 crores is set aside for the development of Catholic communities, and they must make the best use of it, ” said Vidhana Mandala Backward Class and Minorities’ Committee president, MLA J R Lobo.

He was speaking during a discussion held with the Catholic community leaders, at St Michael School in the city, on Thursday, October 27.

“The government has announced several programmes for the development of society and a special grant in the budget. The amount of Rs 125 crores can be used for several pro community programmes,” he said.

“The government has created Catholic Development Committee for community development. It has appointed Bengaluru urban development minister K J George as the president and me as the vice president of the committee. It has also formed a subcommittee and appointed me as its president. Petitions for renovation or repairs of churches, cemetery, boundary wall, skills training and other development work in the community can be submitted,” he said.

“Christians comprise 3.6% of the population in the state. The government has given special importance to their development, but the community lags behind in making use of government released funds,” MLA Lobo said.

“Special camps should be held in various districts to make information on government programmes reach the people. Fund up to Rs one crore in the city and Rs 50 lac in towns is being provided for community halls. An amount is also paid for maintenance of old age homes,” he said.

Community representative, K T Baby Mathew, requested for additional funds for repairs of churches, and donations to poor people and for the district level committee, like in the state. Requests for reservation for Catholics could also be heard in the meeting.

K E Mathew said, extensive details of the government facilities such as scholarships, caste certificates, etc are required.

Mysore Medical College alumnus Dr.Dechu Ponnappa gets global recognition

The Leading Physicians of the World (LPW) has recognised Dr. Dechu Ponnappa Puliyanda, MD, an alumnus of Mysore Medical College (MMC), as a top Paediatric Nephrologist in California by including her name in its 2016 edition.

LPW, which began as a yearly publication, selecting and documenting the biographies of medicines brightest minds, has over time evolved into the largest international exclusive medical organisation, representing first rate doctors in over 100 different medical specialties in all major markets across the globe.

Profile: Dechu Puliyanda is an astute clinician with a special interest in Pediatric Nephrology and kidney transplantation. After finishing her Fellowship in Nephrology and Transplantation from Harvard, she joined the prestigious Cedars Sinai Medical Centre in Beverly Hills California, where she currently serves as the Director of the Pediatric Nephrology programme. She is a professor of Pediatrics at Cedars Sinai Medical Centre as well as Professor of Pediatrics at the UCLA-David Geffen School of Medicine at Los Angeles, California.

Her research has focused on viral infections in the post transplant period, and surrogate markers for renal transplant rejection. She is a world-renowned speaker and has presented at a number of national and international conferences. She is an author of many peer-reviewed publications in prestigious medical journals. In addition, she has a very strong commitment to providing comprehensive care to children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease.

Dr. Dechu Puliyanda is is a member of the American Society of Transplantation, International Pediatric Transplantation Association, American Society of Nephrology, American Society of Pediatric Nephrology, International Pediatric Nephrology Association to name a few.

A gold medallist from Mysore Medical College (MMC), Dr. Dechu Puliyanda completed her internship and residency at the Rush Presbyterian St.Luke’s Medical Centre in Chicago. She then completed her Fellowship in Nephrology and Transplantation at the Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston.

She is the daughter of late Dr. Kokkalera Ponnappa and Machie Ponnappa (nee Pandanda), who is a resident of Mittal Panorama on Lalitha Mahal Road in Mysuru. She is married to Subbaiah Puliyanda and the couple have two children, Siddarth and Sitara.

Dechu’s brother Uthaiah Kokkalera is a Robotic Laparascopic Surgeon in Los Angeles, California.

MLA Ranjan inaugurates sports hostel in Madikeri

The long-pending demand for a sports hostel in Madikeri turned a reality on Saturday. MLA Appachu Ranjan dedicated the facility, at the district stadium complex, to the young sporting talent in the district.

Addressing the gathering, Ranjan a former a minister of Sports and Youth Empowerment said, “The authorities should spot the sporting talent, nurture them and make them battle-ready for big stage competitions.”

.The MLA called upon the budding sportspersons to make use of the facilities and carve a niche for themselves at national and international level.

Ranjan said, there was a demand for sports hostel in Madikeri on the lines of Koodige and Ponnampet, which has been realised now.

The legislator said that, as a Sports minister he had sanctioned Rs 15 crore towards the development of sporting infrastructure in Kodagu district. An estimated Rs three crore was spent on building a swimming pool and indoor stadium, besides astroturfs were laid at Ponnampet and Somwarpet hockey stadiums.

Ranjan said, during his stint as sports minister, he made sincere efforts to introduce guidelines for sports awards in order to eliminate lobbying and other wrong means to get awards and ensure the deserving get rewards for their achievements and feats, he said.

International hockey player Arjun Halappa said “Youth should make the most of sporting infrastructure and opportunities available in the district”.

P E Kalaiah, one of the members of world cup winning Indian Hockey team, Assistant Director of Department of Sports and Youth Empowerment Jayalakshmi Bai among others were present.

Mysuru :

Spoorthi-2016, a four-day motivational workshop for college students (boys and girls) from Kodagu district, organised by Kodava Deenabandhu Charitable Trust, Mysuru, began at Kodava Samaja in Vijayanagar first stage here yesterday.

Deenabandhu Trustee Maj. Gen. (retd.) Codanda K. Karumbaya addressed the participants at a formal function held in the Samaja premises this morning.

Trust President Kattera A. Kariappa, Secretary Pattada A. Jayakumar, Treasurer Wing Commander (retd.) Chendrimada G. Madappa, Trustees Lt. Col. (retd). Chourira A. Ganapathy, Mechanda M. Karumbaiah, Maletira Chimmi Nanjappa and Pattamada Shanthi Ganapathy, volunteer Anu Mudduraj, Dechu Karumbaya, Geetha Kuttappa, Anila Madappa and others were present.

Nearly 40 students from across Kodagu District are taking part in the workshop, which features motivational workshops, educational tours to prominent institutions and many other such initiatives.

District hospital in Madikeri to be upgraded, says Patil

Medical Education Minister Dr Sharanaprakash R Patil assured of upgrading the district hospital in Madikeri by increasing the number of beds from 410 to 650.

He paid a sudden visit to the district hospital in town on Thursday. Speaking to mediapersons later, he said that the hospital lacked space for an upgrade.

“Land will be needed for construction of the new medical college, but there is a need to upgrade the hospital as well. Compared to last year’s condition, the hospital has improved a lot,” he said.

Dr Patil inspected the facilities at the dialysis, X-Ray, women’s surgery ward, emergency unit and other wards and directed the hospital staff to clear the hospital of unwanted materials.

The minister, meanwhile, visited the construction site of Kodagu Medical College and inspected the work. The building can currently accommodate the students of first year MBBS course, he said and directed the contractor to complete the necessary works such as construction of protective walls, as soon as possible.

“The quality of the construction work is good. If needed, a third party inspection will be conducted regarding the quality of work,” he stated.

“The Medical Council of India has given permission to start the classes from the current year itself,” he added.

Dr Patil also inspected various sections such as dissection hall, security section, cold storage, anatomy museum and auditorium. He said that the hostels should be ready for accommodation before the admission of students. MLC Sunil Subramani, DC Meer Anees Ahmmed and district Surgeon Muttappa were present.

3 girls top in ICSE exams

Pandit Aradhana Swanand has emerged as the district topper in ICSE class X exams. The student from Coorg Public School secured 97%.

A R Hitha has secured 96%, with 100 in computer applications, while C M Monica has also scored 96%, the school stated, adding that “the three of them have achieved a unique distinction of scoring 1 point in all subjects”.

Coorg Public School has posted centum results, which, it stated, is a feat, given that it has scored 100% for 18 successive years.

Of the 85 students, 16 have scored over 90% marks and 34 above 80% marks.

Madikeri: Fr Wilfred Rodrigues OCD is awarded PhD

Fr Wilfred Rodrigues OCD, current rector of Carmelite novitiate house, Tapovana, Kushalnagar was awarded PhD in philosophy by the University of Mysuru.

He did his thesis on ‘Personal fulfillment and happiness through freedom from cravings – a comparative study of Gautama Buddha and St John of the cross’ which he defended on March 11. The thesis was completed in record time of around three years. The research work was much appreciated by the external examiners as well as the guide and members of the doctoral committee of the University of Mysuru.

Fr Wilfred has made the Rodrigues family and the entire Carmelite Order, especially the Karnataka-Goa Province proud. This is a very good contribution both to the field of philosophy as well as spirituality which will help millions of people to free themselves from their cravings so that they may find fulfillment and happiness in their lives.

Air Indian Subbaiah conferred Doctorate by Mangalore University

Air India’s Senior Manager (In-flight Services), Bangalore and Hockey Olympian Mr A B Subbaiah has been conferred the degree of Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) by Mangalore University for his contribution to the field of Sports and Social service.

Hans Raj Bhardwaj, the Governor of Karnataka, conferred the same on Anjaparavanda Bopaiah Subbaiah on the occasion of the 31st Annual convocation of the University held on February 23, 2013 at Mangalore, in the presence of Mr T C Shivasankara Murthy, Vice-chancellor of Mangalore University, Mr. Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, besides other dignitaries. He shared the stage with two other noted recipients Padma Shri. Kadri Gopalnath, a pioneer in Carnatic music on saxophone, and Chandrashekhara Kambara, the founder Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University at Hampi and a Jnanpith awardee.

Born in Madikeri of Kodagu district in Karnataka, Subbaiah joined Air India in 1989 and has represented the airline’s hockey team over many years. He has been involved in the game of Hockey for over 30 years and has represented the national team in more than 285 international matches. Between 1988 and 1998, he took part in over 285 international fixtures, thereby winning several gold, silver and bronze medals.

He represented India in Barcelona Olympics in 1992, led the India International Hockey team 1993, represented World cup in 1994 and Atlanta Olympics in 1996 besides three Asian games winning one Gold and two silver medals. He was honoured with Karnataka Rajyostva award in 1993, Arjuna award in 1997, Ekalavya award in 2003 and Karnataka Olympic association award for life time achievement in 2010.

Subbaiah led the Bangalore University’s hockey team in 1986-87. In the recent league tournament fixtures, he donned a new role, that of a commentator. He continues his services to the game by acting as the coach, Manager, umpire, administrator and selector.
